Why bone is sometimes missing
When a tooth is lost, the jawbone beneath it shrinks from lack of stimulation, and that can change the shape of your mouth. It is common, and it is nothing you have done wrong.
Tooth loss
Without a root to stimulate it, the bone beneath a missing tooth gradually shrinks.
Gum disease
Gum disease can reduce the bone that supports your teeth.
How your teeth developed
Some people have less bone in certain areas because of the way their teeth formed.
Trauma or past treatment
An injury, or earlier dental procedures where the natural bone was not restored, can leave less bone behind.

Bone graft
Strengthening the bone
Bone grafting strengthens the area your dental implant will be placed into. Bone is taken from elsewhere in the mouth and placed where it is needed.
Over a number of months the two fuse together, creating a stronger base for your implant.

Sinus lift
Making space in the upper jaw
If there is not enough space to fit an implant in your upper jaw, Pinar or Jonathan may recommend a sinus lift. The sinus membrane is gently moved upwards to create room.
A bone graft then fills the space that has been created, making a suitable place for your implant.
Bone expansion
Widening a narrow jawbone
If your jawbone is too narrow for an implant, your dentist may recommend bone expansion. A small opening is made where your implant will eventually sit, and bone graft material is used to widen and strengthen the bone. It is then left to heal before your implant is placed.

At your consultation, Pinar or Jonathan will use x-rays and scans to check your bone and gums, and explain clearly whether any preparatory treatment is needed.
2Preparing the foundation
If you need a graft, sinus lift or bone expansion, it is carried out with care and then given time to heal.
3Your implant treatment begins
Once your dentist is happy your bone and gums are healthy, your dental implant treatment can begin.

FAQs
It’s natural to have questions
Will I definitely need a bone graft or sinus lift?
Not everyone does. Many implants are placed without any preparatory treatment. Your scans will show whether there is enough bone, and we will explain what we find.
Will treatment hurt?
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the area is numb. Some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days.
How long does healing take?
Grafted bone needs a number of months to fuse and strengthen before an implant can be placed. Your own timescale is explained at your consultation.
Does this mean I can’t have implants?
Usually the opposite. These treatments exist so that people with less bone can still be considered for implants. Suitability is always confirmed at your assessment.
How much does it cost?
It depends on what you need. Your consultation is free, a CT scan is £395 per jaw, and any preparatory treatment is priced in your written plan before you decide.
