Hygiene & Gum Disease Treatments

Hygiene
As well as regular dental health appointments, frequent dental hygiene treatment is essential to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Your hygienist will:
- Carry out an initial dental hygiene examination
- Scale your teeth to remove any plaque or tartar build up
- Clean and polish your teeth to remove any superficial stains
- Offer advice on how to maintain good dental health and explain how poor dental health can affect your general wellbeing
- Provide support materials so you can maintain your gums at home
Gum Disease
Gum disease is the swelling, soreness, and infection of the gum and tissues supporting your teeth, caused by plaque build-up. The most common sign of gum disease is bleeding whilst you are cleaning your teeth, but other symptoms include sore gums, unpleasant breath, and pus secretions from around the teeth.
Treatment involves a thorough check up of your teeth and gums, including measurements of the gum around each tooth to detect whether gum disease has begun and X-rays if required. For minor cases, a number of sessions with the hygienist will be needed to thoroughly clean all surfaces of the teeth and you may be prescribed a medicated mouthwash. More severe cases may need further cleaning of the roots of your teeth to remove bacteria pockets, which will require local anaesthetic, or a specialist treatment to battle gum disease called Dentomycin.
Hygienists - Direct Access
We provide this service for un-registered patients who may often have a dentist of their own that does not provide hygienist services, or for patients who have no dentist at all.
We are happy to welcome you to our practice. We must, however, point out that the treatment our hygienists provide have a different remit legally to a dentist. They are trained to carry out full assessments of the health of gums, provide preventative oral health care and instructions, undertake scaling and polishing, provide fluoride treatments, and carry out oral cancer screening. They are not able to diagnose dental decay or treatment plan any restorative work.
If, during your treatment, the hygienist becomes aware of any abnormalities they will inform you and also contact your dentist to inform them of any concerns, but it is your responsibility to return to your registered dentist for any further treatment or you are, of course, welcome to register here to see a dentist.
The dental hygienists working at our practice are:
Genevieve Beranek – Stanley BDS 193014 (working as a hygienist)
Emma Lucas - 125383 Dental Therapist
